/Film: Damon Lindelof Updates The Dark Tower

  • marz · 1 year ago
i read all the dark tower books and i would loooove to see it adapted into a movie..hell even a mini series if they could do it right and not make it look cheesey..so that leaves the sci fi channel out lol the screenplay would have to stay true to the books or it wont work.NO cutting corners or heavy hacking in the editing room.i think either del toro or abrams would do it justice.u cant just put this into anybodies hands.maybe even sam raimi.if they can do it to the harry potter books, they can do it with this!!!
  • Dustin · 1 year ago
I'm a big fan of the books and have mostly enjoyed the recent Marvel releases but I just don't see this having the drawing power to sustain a seven film saga. This is yet another adaptation I'd prefer to see through HBO or Showtime where things have time to gestate.
  • Clive Staples · 1 year ago
Show show show show show show show. Not a movie. TV is the only viable medium for this work, otherwise it will bomb. I'd rather wait 10 more years for a decent HBO version than 3 years for a silver screen Gunslinger that will fail and therefore doom subsequent installations. Do it right, dudes.

    mmmmm...gestate.
only way this doesn't suck is if it's a very faithful animated adaptation.

A faithful CGI animation would work. However...Draw it and it will fail
  • orange cinema · 1 year ago
the fact that they are looking at in the same serious way that LOTR was approached is such a relief. i also wonder if this will be able to capture a large enough audience to make all 7, or if it will suffer the same fate as the recent chronicles of narnia disasters.

an HBO or SHO series would be pretty sweet, but i've always seen deschain as Viggo Mortenson, but i doubt he'd be down to do it. these books are very weird and beautiful, i think it'd be almost like that old show 'Carnivale'.

either way, it can't be treated like most of the stephen king tv miniseries. i loved 'the stand' and 'it', but even they are a little cheesy. some of the others are downright silly.

this is hard i dont know if a hbo adaption would have a big enough budget to faithfully represent the world roland lives in . Pluse sorry to sat rland can only be played by bruce cambell !! NUFF SAID

    volvo,

or a well done series on HBO or Showtime. Like they have proven.
  • Sauce · 1 year ago
I've always seen this as an epic miniseries on Showtime or HBO. Have the LOST heads write up the treatment and produce, bring in a lot of top notch actors. Then have each two hour episode be directed by someone different.
My thought has always been that as you progress through the books that each setting is different and each story has their own feel to it. When we go back to Eddie's time/world/universe to pull him through the door we need someone who can direct the dirty grimy New York City that only the movies remember. But, I'd want to see someone else's vision for harvest time in Hambry where Roland meets Susan.

This has always lead me to believe a long, well done mini-series would be the way to go. Maybe after LOST these guys will see that too.

How many hours should this whole project be? 19 one hour episodes too obvious?

I'm not pointing out a typo for the sake of it but did Lindelof really get the rights for $19? Did he buy King lunch or something?

Would not work as movies. Would work better as an epic series on HBO.

"I’m not pointing out a typo for the sake of it but did Lindelof really get the rights for $19?"

Have you read the series? There's a significance with 19.
  • Priest · 1 year ago
@ Graeme: As far as I remember it was actually 19$ and it was 19 as it had some form of significance within the book.

good article in the wall street journal today- a1 and a20 - about the glut of films in hollywood right now. too many 13m - 18 m budgets, many going to dvd, that were not INTENDED to. take a look, i think it would be an interesting read for /filmers.
  • Thomas · 1 year ago
The first four books were good, the last ones sucked. Oh, man did they suck. One of the biggest cop-outs I've ever read. Song of Susannah??? Nothing happens in the book - NOTHING. And inserting himself into the mix? Ok, we get it...you almost died.

And let's face it, the only good King movies are those that aren't horror/fantasy - The Body, Shawshank Redemption, Misery, etc. IT? Great book, bad movie. The Stand? Great book, verrrry bad movie. The Shining? Thank god for Kubrick, who changed so much around that the movie barely resembled the book.

Look, King's work has sucked ever since his accident.

I've never read the books, but I've heard great things about it. (Puts down copy of Watchmen next to The Hobbit, mutters under breath "goddam book-to-movie adaptations")
  • Jacobi · 1 year ago
I think Darlton could pull it off as a movie series, but it really needs to be done as a six-season TV series: One season per book, with "The Gunslinger" adapted as an introductory miniseries, ala Battlestar Galactica.
  • volvo · 1 year ago
i really can't think of any living actor that could play roland. except eastwood from the 1960's or 70's. plus the actor playing jake would age too dramatically by the time a series or slew of movies were finished.
aaaandd...live action adaptations of king's work do tend to suck. the comics are good.
therefore...if it ain't gonna suck like the stand miniseries make it an animated series on hbo or animated movies. get the guy who did tekkonkinkreet...could be great.
  • YoungZe · 1 year ago
Every time i see an episode of Carnivalé i can't stop thinking about a badass Dark Tower adaptation, i mean, it would work. A Series would be so much better than a movie.
  • Sam from 88mph · 1 year ago
The Dark Tower is easily my favourite series of books ever and I have to say that I disagree with everyone saying that it would only work as a TV series. I think that you should slap the first two books together as one film and then if they do it right people will come back and watch the other five. Get different directors for different parts, like somebody said here in the thread.

The reason the books are so dense is that there is a lot of description etc, the plot contained therein could easily be just six movies. Especially with the current trend of the average movie being two or more hours long.
  • Agent J · 1 year ago
....gestate......I can see this being on HBO or Showtime.
  • Jeremy · 1 year ago
If tickets were on sale right now, I'd buy them. I enjoyed reading this series of books sooooo much! I completely agree with Sam, these books were crazy long because they were incredibly descriptive!

This would be great as a movie, someone who is a super fan of the book series needs to direct, and to it right. Just like LOTR. There is no need to make each book its own movie. The entire thing could probably be made a trilogy.

    I'm psyched!
  • volvo · 1 year ago
think of the illustrations in the books. now picture them moving.
    gotta be animated.
or else shia will be eddie and hugh jackman will be roland and that would be gross.

  • rich101682 · 1 year ago
Yeah, it was for $19. King said he was glad Abrams and Co. were so excited and such big fans, and he said he didn't need the money, so he sold the rights to him for $19. It was in one of King's articles in Entertainment Weekly last year around this time.

For years Lord of the Rings was known as the "unfilmable" film. People thought it couldn't possibly be adapted, filmed, and released in a viable manner - let alone become a huge hit. They succeeded beyond anyone's expectations, becoming one of the only trilogies ever to have each film surpass the pervious one's box office numbers. And lets not forget the dozen or so oscars ROTK won.

Have a little faith. While The Dark Tower isn't nearly as hyped or popular as the Harry Potter series, the hype it drums up while a new film is written, filmed, and released would be considerable. Especially if a notable director like JJ Abrams is attached to it.

Plus, the first book - The Gunslinger - has a pretty kick ass title. If that doesn't draw people to the movie, nothing will!
  • Laura · 1 year ago
I agree with the others who said better a show than movie. But I don't think this is any more complicated than LOTR, just longer, so maybe...

Whatever happens, I hope they don't bunk it up, and the books finally get the recognition they deserve!
  • volvo · 1 year ago
yeah, morning smegma is the best kind.
  • killking · 9 months ago
MMMMM .where can i find that ?
  • Chelsea · 1 year ago
I didn't read all the comments for I apologize if I'm repeating something.

I think this would only work well as feature films. Granted, like people have said, and HBO series would probably be OK, but I don't want to see it anywhere other than the big screen.

When LOTR came out I thought that Viggo Mortensen would be a good Roland, but I don't want to see him typecast anymore.

Also, if the movies would be made, they should make 6 instead of 7. There's no way that the first book alone would be able to capture non-readers into wanting more. It's too slow.

But I think it could be done. Editing and cutting would be necessary in order to make it fluid enough, again, for non-readers.

And did anyone see No Country for Old Men in theaters (I know, it's such a small film I doubt anyone did haha), but those shots of the desert on the big screen were to DIE FOR. I saw them and went "this is the Dark Tower." That's what made me determined to see it on the big screen.
  • Juan Carlo · 1 year ago
I have read this series five times. I now want to start over and go for number six. Hmmm, series versus movies... MAYBE it'd work better as a show, I agree. But if they film the whole seven stories (or maybe six at once and shoot WIZARDS AND GLASS separatley) like LOTR, get WETA with some of the effects, and --WOW, I've just of this-- get VIGGO MORTENSEN to play ROLAND... hey guys, who knows, this could work!
  • killking · 9 months ago
    Bruce cambell as roland
  • Dark Tower · 1 year ago
HBO for sure...it would ensure that the complete saga is made, although a film could be great if they plan it extensively...but he's right, people have to see the first one before anything....fans will go and there has to be a few million right there....but who is going to be Roland????...after seeing the fountain, Hugh Jackman has the goods and certainly would fit the clint eastwood look....given the right words, he is a good actor.
  • marz · 1 year ago
if they had done this a while ago, i would say use hale joel ausment (the kid from A.I. and the 6th sense) as eddie.but i do agree, hugh jackman or viggo would make good rolands.they have that 'western cowboy' look.and as for susannah...maybe sanaa lathan or zoe saldana.i dont think i wanna see this movie animated.you dont realy care for or have feelings for a character thats not real flesh and blood..unless its made like beowolf..but even then...
  • southwick · 1 year ago
Make sure someone like Viggo gets cast as Roland, or Clint Eastwood is cloned then quickly aged to 45.
  • volvo · 1 year ago
hugh jackman is good in the fountain but he's too soft to be roland. you'd need someone who could project that subtle menacing intensity that eastwood has. maybe viggo but for lotr. that's just too much viggo in my epic stories. ok daniel day lewis could play roland but he'd never take the role. robert downey jr. is the perfect eddie but maybe he's too old.
still think it should be animated.
if it's done right animation can have just as much emotional weight to it as live action. but yeah no beowolf style please.
  • southwick · 1 year ago
Honestly I hadn't really even thought of the fact that Viggo was in LOTR. He is just the only person that comes to mind as a follow up to Clint Eastwood (who I have always assumed King thought of when writing the stories). His role is Hidalgo def makes me think he could do the grizzled wirey cowboy type.
  • volvo · 1 year ago
yeah, i think viggo could do it. and i'd rather it be him than anybody else i can think of except daniel day lewis. i'd like to see daniel day lewis massacre the entire town of tull. that thought alone is making me rethink my animation prejudice.
  • Chelsea · 1 year ago
Guys, seriously, you have to look outside of the box on this one. This is the opportunity to but a good actor in a new and exciting role and you're coming up with Mortensen and Jackman? Seriously? Do "Aragorn" and "Van Helsing" ring any bells? They've already had to play mysterious, brooding roles.

You need to get an actor that you'd never expect. Like how I never thought that Josh Brolin would be so awesome in No Country for Old Men but he totally pulled it off. For a second I was thinking "Maybe HE could be Roland" but then I realized that, like Viggo and Hugh, he's done that role, so he can't do it again.

I can't think of anyone off of the top of my head, but I'm sure any casting people could come up with someone unexpected.

    That's what I want. Someone UN-expected.
  • Dustin · 1 year ago
Nathan Fillion? Not serious enough I suppose.
  • Jodi · 6 months ago
I would cast Gina Torres as Susannah and Adam Baldwin as Roland... just make him grow his hair a bit more and hey presto! Its also a role I think he would do well. He mentions in a few interviews that he always wanted to play the part of a grizzled mercenary/cowboy type...
  • Josh · 1 year ago
The problem with doing DT in feature film is so much of the books would have to be cut. If this series had a rating it would be NC-17. An HBO miniseries would be able to tackle the material on the page without losing the intensity and raw feel The Gunslinger has.
  • izikavazo · 1 year ago
I'd rather see this as a TV series rather than a series of movies. Seven seasons would be better than seven movies, and then they wouldn't have to cut much.
    That's what i think.

I completely agree with everyone who says it should be an HBO seris. If it was a movie too much of it would have to cut story-wise let alone the violence and nudity from the books. In order for a film to make big bucks it would have to be PG-13 when we all know it would really need to an R-rated film. HBO would do the books the most justice. It could turn into an awesome show like Rome.
  • i eat foil · 1 year ago
i am all about them making seven movies, one for each book. i had an intersting thought about the ending though. at the end of seven roland finds cuthberts horn, witch is possibly his salvation from running on an endless loop to save the tower. maybe in the opening scene of the first movie roland will have the horn already, meaning the movies take place right where the books left off. then the whole thing could run the same as the books, only with roland actually ending his quest somehow instead of the cycle repeating again. if you think this is a good idea please spread it around. many dt fans ive talked to think it would be exciting to see the actual end.
  • jew · 11 months ago
look i have already spent three years scripting these books out i have been planning these movies in my head for quite some time and let me tell you how it has to be done. first of all get all your big name casting dreams out of here you need to cast a bunch of really good unknown talent so that you can see them as the characters instead of someone playing the characters. second i have condensed these down to four films not seven or six the only stand alone book to movie is the last book, the rest i have paired up and it works perfect and all the films must be filmed at the same time much like they did lothr to preserve the age of jake and the other actors as well and i am currently trying to get in touch with those involved because i have the ability to give them a huge jump start on this project i promise that this is the best way to do it i have taken the utmost care to to translate the story to screenplay and to be as faithful as i can be because i am a huge fan i love these characters almost as if they were my own and i have studied them and learned so much about them and their world that they feel like family to me and as a fan who is disappointed by so many book to movie translations i want to get this done right for all of us
  • bob · 1 year ago
gotta say, can't get on board with the whole "having the horn already" idea. if that were the first shot of the first film, i would stand up and walk out, b/c it would completely undercut the meaning of the books: going through all kinds of hell to obtain redemption. we, as fans, don't need to offer up any more revisions on this series, king's done enough of that already to fix his continuity issues and narrative gaps. honestly, the ending of the series fits perfectly in my opinion, it was just the way it was achieved that let me down.
  • GreaterHater · 6 months ago
i would think through the course of roland's life that he made many a poor judgement, that having the horn already would not drastically change his final outcome but could show that he is learning, if even on a subconscious level. having the horn already could mean that he makes another "mistake" and therefore is still destined to continue his perpetual journey...just a thought. also, have you read any of the comics for this? it's pretty interesting to see them explore aspects of the story that were just merely mentioned in the novels.

Listen the dark tower is way to huge to be a mini series. there is no way it would work. and if it were to be on the big screen the only person i think that could pull it off, by making it just as visually stunning as the book would be frank miller.
  • Eli · 1 year ago
does clint eastwood have any sons with dark hair?
  • southwick · 1 year ago
I think it could work very well as a mini series.
HBO puts on amazing series based off of books. They are helmed by big names, and are well done.

Think Band of Brothers and John Adams.

Do a book or two a season.
  • deliriousfae · 1 year ago
Has everyone lost their minds? It seems like you're all overlooking one big thing...there are some very dark moments in these books that would have censors throwing conniption fits. Have you all forgotten what happens to Susannah while Eddie is trying to draw Jake from the house in Dutch Hill? How exactly would you put that on television? There is no way to be faithful to the books if you put it on television. And with as badly as the Harry Potter series has been butchered for the big screen, I cringe when I think of them making a 7 movie series for The Dark Tower. This whole thing is a bad idea all the way around.
  • GreaterHater · 6 months ago
HBO or Showtime could get away with the graphic nature of this content very easily. the biggest issue i see that could hold this back would be acquiring the rights to all of the pop culture within the books, i.e., the beatles, elton john, texaco, citgo, and various other things, but mostly the music, but who knows? i to am skeptical, but would love to see this done right and done well...which will sadly be unlikely for either. although seeing this story thru a different medium would fit nicely within the entire theme of multiple realities overlapping each other...
  • Jason · 1 year ago
I think It should be a series of movies as long as they are nothing less then R Rated and keep all of the best and most important parts of the books. I think it should be 6 movies they should combine The Gunslinger and The Drawing Of The Three books.
  • Action Jackson · 1 year ago
I think that Roland should be played by an unknown because I can think of a good actor that would fit the role. Mortensen is too short, the gunslinger should be tall and maybe gawky with long limbs. This is the image I got from the books. Also, the scope of the books are likely too much to fit in a feature film.
  • Hellgirl · 1 year ago
Thank you STEPHEN KING! Since I opened the 1st DT book I have 'seen' the movie playing in my mind. If it doesn't have big name stars in it, who cares! Because the characters cross into other 'whens' and other 'STEPHEN KING books' it might b wise to use some of the actors that have been in other adaptations.(MIST.DREAMCATCHER.THE STAND.SALEMS LOT. Make a trilogy. Make it straight to DVD, maybe a box set. The true fans & CR's will still watch. That way people who don't know anything about the DT cannot criticize. P.S don't give up on this please!!

start with book one and flashback to susan and roland----that is a 2 and a half hour powerhouse. roland could explain to jake about love and betrayal underneath the mountains--maybe a way to give insight as to why the gunslinger is cold and only focused on the tower , not relationships?

I started this series when i was in grade school. I have followed it since, the same as many of you I have always through of this as a great movie. However there could be no greater tragedy than to create one or two of the movies and have Hollywood drop out for whatever reason; the same goes for a series though, case in point carnivale.

I think there should be a mix of well known actors with new actors as well, the actor who played jesus in passion was unknown and did quite well. he might be a good roland. While I think it would make for a very interesting watch, I dont think that animation is the way to go, it just does not capture the human feeling; however better that then not to be created, or even worse only partly finished.

for those of you who suggested eastwood as roland, its too obvious, and he is much too old, it would be interesting to see who they would be choosing for the main actors. to put a face and voice with the image many of us have created ourselves. at the time i agree that i pictured an eastwood as roland, but to put some perspective on this i also pictured cory feildman as jake. But this was more than 20 years ago.
  • DrRipper · 1 year ago
I agree that it would be difficult to execute 7 films... I like the idea of an HBO miniseries of all of the books combined (in 19 one-hour episodes, maybe?).
  • B*Locke · 1 year ago
If it was a movie they'd have to cut out waaaay too many important parts to give it the PG 13 rating it would need to bring in money.
If it was a show it would have to be on a network that would let it get bloody and let it do six or seven seasons.
I've often wondered how they could pull off a lot of things in those books. Like Suzanna riding in the sling on Eddies back? That would look rediculous, actually it sounds rediculous too.
People with animal heads? That could be either really cool or super cheesy.
The Gunslinger running around present time New York would be kind of dumb if not approached right.
And they just need to completely eliminate the whole Stephen King cameo, that was just a stupid idea from the start.
  • CaptnCoala · 1 year ago
When LOTR was made into a movie, a severe disservice was done to Tolkien. I would hate for that to happen to King, Roland and his Kar-tet and the Dark Tower. I think they managed to portray darkness in The Kingdom well, so it would be possible to pull of the dark sides of DT easily enough. I would be more worried at what they would cut, and the crap they would replace, it just wouldn't be the Dark Tower anymore, just "a film loosely based", I hate those.
  • SwamplorD · 12 months ago
Movies would work. The gunslinger and Drawing of the Three can be put together and Songs of Susannah and The Dark Tower can be put together. So you can have a 5 movie series. Could also be done in volumes like Tarantino's Kill Bill vol. 1 and Vol 2. HBO series seems more likely. I love the Band of Brothers mini series and the show The Wire which watches like a book (has to be seen to be believed). HBO could do this show more justice but seems less unlikely under JJ Abrams eye.

I think that Nick Stahl (Carnivale) would make the perfect Eddie, and Susannah should be Megalyn Echikunwoke (remember Isabelle from the 4400?). As to Roland, i think that it HAS to be Vigo, even tho he already played Aragorn. He is brilliant (so looking forward for The Road). Jake should be cast from unknown kids (i always imagined him like Alex from the Mummy 2 but he must be in his twenties by now). What about Cuthbert and Alain? I like Patrick Flueger (again, the 4400) for Cuthbert, and Chace Crawford for Alain (i know gossip girl is not much of reputation for a saga like DT, but i think he can really put the Alain looks).
Oh, and Eastwood HAS to be in the film, too... i dont care whom he plays.
  • calvintower · 8 months ago
I think Jeff Fahey could play Roland. Since all the readers that made the long journey already know what happens that will make The Dark Tower different than Lost. In Lost it seems that they just took a lot of SK's ideas and made them their own. I find many similarities in Lost to TDT. So I can understand why they got the job. Like King I also dig Lost. I disagree with a prior posting I think the last three DT novels were great. It makes sense to me, perfect sense, it took a near death experience to realize the end of Roland's tale, he almost died on June 19, 1999, Browning's poem the original inspiration has 19 stanzas. Sounds like Ka to me.

Cut out all the egotism of King being gan and his writing created the universe!! What a crock of s...!! If it was live action you would need to get a whole line of brothers to play Jake, each about two years apart and identical in looks. A movie would be impossible for that alone! This may be just because I like Johnny Depp, but I think he could play a good Roland Deschain. The way Johnny becomes the characters of all his movies I think he could become Sai Deschain extremely well. I would love to see The Dark Tower in 6 or 7 films, but I could settle for a TV series. I really just want Rolands tale to be able to be shared with everyone. I fell in love with these books as if it they were a person so I really would just love to see them come to life in another media besides books and comics.

I dont think that Halle Berry is right for the role of Odetta/Detta/Susannah. for one she is far to angular, and O/D/S is described as being muscular but still rounded. Gina Torres (Zoe from Firefly) would make a wonderful O/D/S, She has the versatile nature that would find the inner being of each of the three charracters she would be playing. She is also a beautiful woman.

As for Viggo, Hugh, Johnny, Daniel Day Lewis and Daniel Craig... I sincerely doubt that ANY of them have the right Stuff to be Roland. Sai Roland Deschain is the hardest of all the roles to cast. as there is honestly no actor of recent times that could possibly embody him in full.
Adam Baldwin is a possibility, if he grew his hair and had blue contacts made, but I doubt even he could pull it off.

There is a character from the Ka-Tet that no-one has mentioned at all. Who would voice Oy? Oy is as much a part of the Ka-Tet as Jake, Eddie or Odetta. The billy bumbler gives his life more than once for those he loves... he deserves to be voiced by someone who understands TDT and Jake and Oy's special relationship.

Brendan Sexton could be a possibility for the part of Eddie, as could the young guy from the movie Constantine.

    Stand and be true.

I certainly disagree!!!! The Gunslinger - Part One from Dark Tower can be written brilliantly as a screenplay if in the right hands !!!! A long time ago when i first read the first novel back in 80's, believing Mr.King had written only three parts !!! I felt The Gunslinger had great potential, originality and purity to compete with adventure films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark ! The Dark Tower series although much more different with a splendid blend of fantasy has much more deeper and darker side with greater depth than Indy,, comparing closer to the character of Aragon in Lord of the Rings or from those characters back in the classic spaghetti western era of the 60's in the Leone tradition as Mr. King obviously had in mind ! Back in the 80's i already began writing a rough screenplay draft within the time of 4 weeks for adaptation,, but the series took so long to complete by Mr King ! I just stopped writing the screenplay towards the end of the 2nd novel as i knew the rights would be impossible for me to aquire! How's Mr King going to trust a first time, unknown young up-coming writer as myself with his greatest story,, let alone the THE PRODUCERS !!! Although to shed some light i found it remarkably easy to adapt as i loved the novels so much and my father was a Western fanatic of John Ford and all those other westerns films of its generation !!!! Dont lose hope all you fans out there !!! I do believe the project is in the right hands now. Wishing lots of luck to the new screen-writers adapting !!! There is GREAT POTENTIAL IN THIS STORY TO BE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FANTASY FILM OF ALL TIME !!!! LOTS OF DARK TOWER FANS OUT THERE,, WHOM HAVE WAITED A LONG TIME TO SEE IT TRANSFORM ONTO THE BIG SCREEN !!!!

Oh Roland , Roland where are thee ???

I would prefer a live action Dark Tower, but I was thinking the other day about how they made Beowulf, by animating over the actors so it looked much more real... Clint could still play Roland, and then when they step through to King's world and Roland is supposed to be old and haggard it flashes to live action. lol

In all seriousness there should be a "fan campaign" to get this project on HBO. I'd love to see Roland on the big screen, but they would chop too much out to get it into feature films.

Should we just give up hope at this point? I haven't heard a real update in over a year now.
