I would prefer a live action Dark Tower, but I was thinking the other day about how they made Beowulf, by animating over the actors so it looked much more real... Clint could still play Roland, and then when they step through to King's world and Roland is supposed to be old and haggard it flashes to live action. lol

In all seriousness there should be a "fan campaign" to get this project on HBO. I'd love to see Roland on the big screen, but they would chop too much out to get it into feature films.

I certainly disagree!!!! The Gunslinger - Part One from Dark Tower can be written brilliantly as a screenplay if in the right hands !!!! A long time ago when i first read the first novel back in 80's, believing Mr.King had written only three parts !!! I felt The Gunslinger had great potential, originality and purity to compete with adventure films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark ! The Dark Tower series although much more different with a splendid blend of fantasy has much more deeper and darker side with greater depth than Indy,, comparing closer to the character of Aragon in Lord of the Rings or from those characters back in the classic spaghetti western era of the 60's in the Leone tradition as Mr. King obviously had in mind ! Back in the 80's i already began writing a rough screenplay draft within the time of 4 weeks for adaptation,, but the series took so long to complete by Mr King ! I just stopped writing the screenplay towards the end of the 2nd novel as i knew the rights would be impossible for me to aquire! How's Mr King going to trust a first time, unknown young up-coming writer as myself with his greatest story,, let alone the THE PRODUCERS !!! Although to shed some light i found it remarkably easy to adapt as i loved the novels so much and my father was a Western fanatic of John Ford and all those other westerns films of its generation !!!! Dont lose hope all you fans out there !!! I do believe the project is in the right hands now. Wishing lots of luck to the new screen-writers adapting !!! There is GREAT POTENTIAL IN THIS STORY TO BE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FANTASY FILM OF ALL TIME !!!! LOTS OF DARK TOWER FANS OUT THERE,, WHOM HAVE WAITED A LONG TIME TO SEE IT TRANSFORM ONTO THE BIG SCREEN !!!!

As for Viggo, Hugh, Johnny, Daniel Day Lewis and Daniel Craig... I sincerely doubt that ANY of them have the right Stuff to be Roland. Sai Roland Deschain is the hardest of all the roles to cast. as there is honestly no actor of recent times that could possibly embody him in full.
Adam Baldwin is a possibility, if he grew his hair and had blue contacts made, but I doubt even he could pull it off.

There is a character from the Ka-Tet that no-one has mentioned at all. Who would voice Oy? Oy is as much a part of the Ka-Tet as Jake, Eddie or Odetta. The billy bumbler gives his life more than once for those he loves... he deserves to be voiced by someone who understands TDT and Jake and Oy's special relationship.

Brendan Sexton could be a possibility for the part of Eddie, as could the young guy from the movie Constantine.

I dont think that Halle Berry is right for the role of Odetta/Detta/Susannah. for one she is far to angular, and O/D/S is described as being muscular but still rounded. Gina Torres (Zoe from Firefly) would make a wonderful O/D/S, She has the versatile nature that would find the inner being of each of the three charracters she would be playing. She is also a beautiful woman.

I would cast Gina Torres as Susannah and Adam Baldwin as Roland... just make him grow his hair a bit more and hey presto! Its also a role I think he would do well. He mentions in a few interviews that he always wanted to play the part of a grizzled mercenary/cowboy type...

This may be just because I like Johnny Depp, but I think he could play a good Roland Deschain. The way Johnny becomes the characters of all his movies I think he could become Sai Deschain extremely well. I would love to see The Dark Tower in 6 or 7 films, but I could settle for a TV series. I really just want Rolands tale to be able to be shared with everyone. I fell in love with these books as if it they were a person so I really would just love to see them come to life in another media besides books and comics.

HBO or Showtime could get away with the graphic nature of this content very easily. the biggest issue i see that could hold this back would be acquiring the rights to all of the pop culture within the books, i.e., the beatles, elton john, texaco, citgo, and various other things, but mostly the music, but who knows? i to am skeptical, but would love to see this done right and done well...which will sadly be unlikely for either. although seeing this story thru a different medium would fit nicely within the entire theme of multiple realities overlapping each other...

i would think through the course of roland's life that he made many a poor judgement, that having the horn already would not drastically change his final outcome but could show that he is learning, if even on a subconscious level. having the horn already could mean that he makes another "mistake" and therefore is still destined to continue his perpetual journey...just a thought. also, have you read any of the comics for this? it's pretty interesting to see them explore aspects of the story that were just merely mentioned in the novels.

very interesting...i had a similar thought on this as well! I think that he should definitely still be "stuck" on his journey. I don't think picking up the horn would have too much weight on his outcome...maybe only losing one finger? or maybe Flagg doesn't die? possibilities are endless but this is a great idea!

To do the dark tower justice it would have to be animated a'la tintin and boy would you have to change the storyline. Cut out all the egotism of King being gan and his writing created the universe!! What a crock of s...!! If it was live action you would need to get a whole line of brothers to play Jake, each about two years apart and identical in looks. A movie would be impossible for that alone! Animated all the way baby!!!

an animated series would work if it was like 12 kingdoms adapt each book into 24 episodes, even if they did it with computer and animated it like battle for terra

I think Jeff Fahey could play Roland. Since all the readers that made the long journey already know what happens that will make The Dark Tower different than Lost. In Lost it seems that they just took a lot of SK's ideas and made them their own. I find many similarities in Lost to TDT. So I can understand why they got the job. Like King I also dig Lost. I disagree with a prior posting I think the last three DT novels were great. It makes sense to me, perfect sense, it took a near death experience to realize the end of Roland's tale, he almost died on June 19, 1999, Browning's poem the original inspiration has 19 stanzas. Sounds like Ka to me.
