/Film: Harrison Ford Earned Almost 2.5 Times More Than The Top Earning Actress in 2008

Stop making everything seem sexist. The bottom line is more people like watching actors. No elaborate agenda or conspiracy to screw actresses out of money. I'm sorry Angelina "only" made $27 million. Christ, enough already.
  • Tracey · 5 months ago
Thanks to Peter Scriretta for posting about this. Unlike other commenters, I'm not concerned that an occasional post about racism or sexism makes this blog sensationalist. In fact, it makes perfect sense that these issues that are being discussed elsewhere are brought up here as well. It would be fishy if gender, race, and other categories of difference were discussed elsewhere and ignored here.

Something is just wrong when Jennifer Aniston gets paid that much more than someone like Kate Winslet.
  • jentakesthecake · 5 months ago
ok, dont you think directors want more cash return than awards?(especially in this reccesion)
they'll take both obviously but in their minds...they think more of the profits
and for people like will smith, he can rack in both...
so anyone thinking of making money and getting attention considering how well known jen is, would pick aniston over winslet...

Maybe it's not about sexism.... Could it possibly be that the actors salaries are based on their respective box office draw?
  • sideshowRaheem · 5 months ago
Well, it still kind of sexism there's not a lot of real good roles for women who don't wanna be in a romantic comedy or play the damsel in distress. Angelina Jolie is really the only name on that list and the only woman in Hollywood that is a legit action movie star and action movies roles are the ones that command the big bucks.

    This.

damn for someone experiencing sexism, as some would lead you to believe, 27 million seems like quite a nice chunk of change for being so "opressed"
  • craig · 5 months ago
Crazy to see Kate Winslet get so little money when she is such a great actress. Why is that? How do some of these actresses get so much money? Sandra Bullock and Sarah Jessica Parker? For what?
  • sideshowRaheem · 5 months ago
    For what?

Here's the explanation "Sex In The City" made over 150mil and "The Proposal" has already made 75mil world wide and it's only been out a few weeks. Meanwhile aside from "Titanic", "The Reader" is Winslet highest grossing film at around 90mil and the majority of her films have made less then 10mil. She's arguably the best actress on that list but she just doesn't make hit movies.
  • arthera09 · 5 months ago
Kate Winslet does not care that much about big pay days. As great as Meryl Streep is and I do not think she does movies just for the money, but Winslet does movies that she wants to do regardless of the paycheck or the "box office draw".
  • Dominick Roney · 5 months ago
Its not that Hollywood is sexist, there are probably only a few people in the world that would rather watch this list of actresses do their job opposed to the highest paying actors list, and this, of course, is with the exception of Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet (Meryl Streep is a great actress, but the movies she picks aren't the type that ask for big paydays). None of these women were in any blockbuster movies, or movies with huge budgets last year (unlike the men on the highest paid actors list), with the exception of Jolie, who is, coincidentally, the highest paid actress. When these women start doing the same jobs as the highest paid men then you can throw a fit that Hollywood is 'sexist.' Johny Depp rightfully deserves to be paid more than any woman on this list. Although I do not think that Mike Meyer's should be on the highest paid actors list I would rather watch him DO ANYTHING than sit through a Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz, Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon, Drew Barrymore, Renee Zellweger, or Halle Berry Movie (they all have their one or two could movies, but look at what they are making now!), and be honest, would you?
  • luke_test · 5 months ago
Sandra Bullock managed to earn $15m in a year in which she had no film out. Couldn't someone from Forbes have just checked IMDB before they made stuff up?

Meryl Streep was in Mamma Mia last year which made $600m worldwide. Sarah Jessica Parker was in Sex and the City which made $415m worldwide.

I wouldnt even compare the grosses of Smart People and Doubt.

Yet Forbes thinks Meryl only made $1m more than Sarah Jessica Parker.

The whole list seems a work of fiction, hardly surprising.
  • jmble · 5 months ago
Yeah, because Forbes always just goes around making stuff up....

Your post is assuming that everybody is working for the same thing, a percentage of the gross. That's just not how it works...

Sure Sandra Bullock didn't have a movie released in 2008, but that doesn't mean she wasn't working on. Do you think actors don't get paid up front for movies they are working on?
  • leo · 5 months ago
Bullock owns a production company - she doesn't have to act to make money.
  • Chris · 5 months ago
I feel like there are far less quality actresses than actors in Hollywood. When Julia Roberts was making decent films, she was topping both sexes with few exceptions. It is such a majority of films that have males for the lead roles and more male dependent in films that they will get paid more for a long time. It is easier to find a decent actress than a great male lead.

Here is a question, what actors and actresses would be on a top 100 list? How many males vs. females would be on the list? Not many females bring much to a film outside of sex appeal... and that is the choice of the actress. Transformers 2 films Fox bent over too many times, and how many lines does she have in the film? Female leads are rare, giving Jolie a couple but none of which are great films by any standard. If Jolie wanted double pay to match some of the male actors, she wouldn't be cast.
  • willywonkanobi · 5 months ago
"Not many females bring much to a film outside of sex appeal... and that is the choice of the actress."

WOW. Nothing like a sexist comment to defend a sexist industry. I am a male, and I even I can see that this is sexist. You are saying that for most part, women aren't in movies for anything but sex appeal, and that somehow that is their choice. When in reality, most writers, directors, and producers are MALE, voiding your entire argument. Sure, women don't have to take rolls that are "sexy", but they are working in a male dominated industry where those are pretty much the only high-paying rolls offered.

Sure it is about money. But that doesn't void the sexism. Just the fact that it is the opinion that people believe that "women can't lead action movies", is sexist and perpetuates that notion in a multibillion dollar industry. I like to point everyone to exibit A: Ellen Ripley in 'Alien' and 'Aliens', particularly Aliens. Ripley pretty much pwned every dude in that movie. If I think about it, Ripley is probably one of my favorite sci-fi action stars. People are just closed-minded (myself included), and we forget that just because it is the status quo doesn't mean it isn't still sexist.

How does Sandra Bullock make money?..

And props to Winslet for being the lowest paid but getting an Oscar.
  • yo_mama · 5 months ago
it's not a sexist thing, it's a money issue. MOST, again i stress MOST female led stories don't do well at the box office. i want to say it was this very site that reported that whatever studio that produced "the brave one" (the jodie foster BOMB) said that they will more than likely stop producing female oled films because no one wants to see them and the studio makes no money.

i hate to say it, but most of these women make AWFUL movies. it's just the stupid ass PUBLIC that continues to see the tripe they are in. if people would stop going to every cliche romantic comedy, then no one would make them and peerhaps these women could stretch their talented legs and do some films that are worth a damn.

perhaps then they would make more money like the men in hollywood do.

    hi peter,

i was just wondering the same things as some other people are: is it really sexist? to me it seems like the person who brings in the most money is simply getting paid more.

like with the $183 vs $393 million figure, it's obvious that those male actors film's made significantly more money that their female counterparts. i'm not saying you're wrong, i'm just wondering how this is a sexist situation?

personally, i'd love to see a higher female presence behind the camera in hollywood. bigelow's 'hurt locker' is one of the best action films i've ever seen. and i know there is no way she makes as much money as a carnahan or neveldine/taylor.

you know, the more i write this post, the more i edit it, cuz i keep thinking of different scenarios. gonna have to ponder this topic - good article.

It might be that the majority of movies have male heros, and the female stars are often regulated to love interests or to be the romantic comedy co-lead. Try to think of a non romantic comedy or indie that has a female character as the lead. Have fun with that :)

    juno

    resident evil movies

    machine girl

    thelma and louise

    tomb raider movies

    carrie

    domino

    panic room

    silence of the lambs

that's all i can think of on the fly....
  • Peter Sciretta · 5 months ago
half of those films are indie or foreign (juno, machine firl, silence of the lambs). RE, Tomb Raider, and Panic room are good... the rest are over a decade old. But out of 100 big releases a year, those are the only movies you can name with female protagonists? Tells you something about female protagonists in big hollywood films.
  • CyT · 5 months ago
Dont forget your market though. Male vs Female attendance in cinemas and buying DVD's and TV's to watch them on? Most chicks dont care about it all enough to warrant spending money on it, they just want light entertainment the majority of the time. A majority male audience would prefer either the sex symbol to watch or a movie with guns and giant robots (or all three if we are lucky :) as opposed to deep female leads.
I have to say that Jodie Foster is without a doubt my favourite actress for resisting that urge and making movies I enjoy equally with her as the lead role, instead of a male character. And she does it without becoming Legally Blonde or some such.
  • sideshowRaheem · 5 months ago
The few female hero movies(Catwoman, Elektra, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Æon Flux, Ultraviolet) have been box office disasters. Although I guess you could make an argument for the Resident Evil series and the 2 Underworld flicks still those two series aren't nearly as successful as movies with male heroes. You could also include Wanted in there because although Jolie was not the primary lead the marketing for the film seemed to be based around her which probably explains why she's at the top of that list.
  • Goro · 5 months ago
It's not just that you have to be a lead, but in Hollywood you have to be a lead for a FEW HIT MOVIES. So, Harrison Ford made the huge bucks not because of the quality of CRYSTAL SKULL, but b/c of the huge revenue of INDY 1,2,3, STAR WARS 4,5,6, FUGITIVE, etc. that established him as a huge Box office star.

As a female movie lead, you have to have at least 2-3 movies that YOU open and that do great Box Office to command the $20+M payday. I think that's a tough one to do and Julie Roberts was the most notable last female to do it.

The big payday isn't really about them as an actor, it's about them as a Star.

    Kill Bill.
  • jason B · 5 months ago
i saw the guys list below...i don't think he read what you wrote (not indie or rom-com!) and yer right, that's a near impossible task. here's what i came up with, look how pathetic my list is:

    kill bill - (indie?)
hilary swank films- ie; the reaping & million dollar baby
kate winslet films- ie; little children (indie?)
    jody foster films- ie; flightplan

so rather than list out all their films, i put these women's names down, because i believe when you hear their names, you're usually getting a good film (foster gets a pass on 'the brave one'). but here again, there's a fine line between what makes a film indie, because you're right: outside of rom-com's & indies, women don't get the same roles.

i thought about this all f-ing day! what does it say about hollywood when this is all we can come up with?

Do you think Shia LaBeouf got alot of money from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull???...he probably got alot from Transformers:ROTF...

And since we're playing cards here lets talk about the fact that out of the top 15 actresses only 1 is Black and I don't see any Latinas or Asians unless you count Cameron Diaz (Cuban father I believe)...Not trying to start shit but I'm just saying.
  • Captain Awesome · 5 months ago
To be fair, Jolie hasn't been in a good film in years. She's not the draw anymore that she once was.
  • jason B · 5 months ago
yer 100% right cap. sad thing is - i don't think she ever really 'spread her wings' as an actor. i think we only caught a glimpse of her actual talent. think about it: she's made around 18 films since winning the oscar, and MAYBE 5 are quality. MAAAAAYBE 5. She's mostly famous for 'being famous', and not for compiling a filmography full of work that she could be proud of. she could pack those theaters years ago, but now nobody expects the 'jolie' name to be synonymous with a quality script/film.

i think she should fire the fuck out of whoever guided her script picking process. i would have loved to see her build a career like winslet has, or blanchette or jody foster, or swank.
  • JordanFRAV · 5 months ago
Interesting, I expected Will 'I will do any film for $10m' Smith to be top of the list, and didn't expect Adam Sandler to be in second after the dreadful 'Don't Mess With The Zohan (Because It Will Make You Suicidal)' and average 'Bedtime Stories'. Also, Jennifer Aniston in second on the female list? Sheesh, is Hollywood full of mugs who enjoy throwing millions of dollars around for the hell of it?...Oh wait...
  • Colonel_Kurtz · 5 months ago
Don't underestimate the $$$ that comes from being the producer.
  • Jon Possible · 5 months ago
I like how the one who made the least on this list is the one who won the Oscar. Correlation? I think so.
  • lilme · 5 months ago
Yeah...and the movie she won it for made no money, no one saw, and frankly (and I love Kate Winslet) didn't deserve the oscar for. BTW Jolie has won an Oscar before, as have half the actresses on the list plus a few extra that were nominated.
  • Mario · 5 months ago
I'd rather see a movie with Ford as the lead character than with Jolie. I think our culture, the audience, is just a tad sexist. Free market at work, guys.
  • xorith · 5 months ago
    hahaha.

these articles keep getting more and more comical.

as long as this is not a serious article then all is well...

caliber of movie + skill at your craft will get you paid, no matter who you are, again this is 2009, not the 1800s.

if it doesnt work out that way, find a new agent. Perhaps the problem is that women do not demand enough for their work, if they are actually worth the premium

"Maybe it's not about sexism.... Could it possibly be that the actors salaries are based on their respective box office draw?"

No. It couldn't. Check out the analysis here: http://www.btchflcks.com/2009/07/pay-discrimina...
  • /tv/ expert. · 3 months ago
lol that analysis is a joke.

It completly leaves out the life time gross of each actor/actress. Do you have any idea how much money harrison movies have made? Star wars? indiana jones? His jack ryan movies?.And you want to compare him to angelina jolie which mas made like 2 high grossing movies?. Dont make me laugh.

The man is an institution, he is funny has great on screen presence and can also believable play the action star, he deserves to be payed that much.
  • DrJones · 5 months ago
They are all overpaid. The Men and the Women. Why does the average Joe have to take a pay cut during hard economic times and worthless entertainers can keep raking in 10 times what they should?

Because the guy who works at McDonals is not bringing in 300 Million in burger sales.
  • David · 5 months ago
I like Angelina Jolie a lot but none of her movies are ever big hits. She does not have the track record of Harrison Ford. Of course he was lucky enough to be in Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises which were some of the biggest money making movies in history. I did like the movie The Changeling that Clint Eastwood directed starring Jolie but is not the type of film that makes big bucks. I don't think Angelina wants to make bid budget blockbusters she cares more about the art of movies. She will make some action flicks but she will not sell her soul for the almighty dollar. Holyywood needs more female directors beacuse something like 99% of movies are told from a male director's point of view and we all know how much we men understan women! LOL Women need to tell their own stories and I think they will be more real and make more money.
  • David · 5 months ago
Holywood is no different than any other industry. Across the board Men make more money than women in all professions. Except for Porn Star, Hooker, and Strippers! Sorry I have to tell it like it is!
  • AV · 5 months ago
This is based on what films they do in a year, it has nothing to do with gender. Harrison Ford made a huge this year, next year he probably wont make half of this. To anyone railing about injustice, you are just silly and I think it is typical of mainstream pseudofeminism to get worked up about how much rich white women are making because Jolie is soooo oppressed.
  • maria · 5 months ago
    Anne Hathaway deserved more...
  • lissa · 4 months ago
I don't even understand why how much money one person makes is soooo important, as long as they earn enough to live on, which they obviously do. Acting should be about exactly that, the ability to portray people and immerge yourself into a character to get a story across to the rest of the world. NOT about fame and money.......thats not real acting.
  • Alison · 3 months ago
It's sexism. You can't really get around it.

Wow. Only 27 million, huh? I guess she'll have to drop STARZ, Showtime & HBO from the family cable package after all.

    Sadness.
